The Secret Of An Ancient Pottery Village in Ninh Thuan Province, #Vietnam

About 10 km from Phan Rang City to the South, right on the National Highway 1A, Bau Truc pottery village in Phuoc Dan town, Ninh Phuoc district, Ninh Thuan Province is considered one of the oldest pottery craft villages in Southeast Asia and famous for unique hand-made pottery products and unique way of baking potter.

Ninh Thuan is a region with many cultural features, including Cham ethnic group’s culture, which contributes to the diversity of Vietnamese culture in general and the History and Culture of Ninh Thuan local ethnic groups in particular.The pottery village has about 400 households, of which over 85 percent of households make this traditional craft.

Bau Truc pottery

It has existed since the reign of Cham King Po Klong Garai (1151-1205) . He and his wife taught the women in the village how to make pottery. The ancient land of Bau Truc has been given to dwellers to give birth and to support the pottery industry: it is made from clay collected from Hamu Craok fields and yellow sand from Quao River.

Despite the present techniques ups and downs, the Cham people have remained their pottery and handed over making techniques from generation to generation in the traditional way. Bau Truc pottery products are now very diverse and plentiful in designs, sizes and colors but remaining the unique characteristic of Champa culture.

On June 20, 2017 , the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MoCST) has released a list of seven national intangible cultural heritages including the traditional pottery job of the Cham in the Village Bau Truc.

Visitor Information:

– Coming to “Lang Nghe Gom Bau Truc” entrance gate following above address – enter it, and then heading straight until you reach Dong Dau Street. Turn left. You can see a few shops selling pottery and watching them making pottery.
– Coming to Bau Truc pottery village, visitors will find Bau Truc products’ own beauty compared to other pottery. The visitors even can try to make it by themselves, the local people here are willing to guide. Bau Truc’s products gradually have become famous ones and consumed in local and international markets. Tourists can buy some pottery products as souvenirs when coming here.
– Every year, in January, April, July of Cham calendar (corresponding to April, July and October) Bau Truc village opened the temple worshipers Mr. Poklong Chanh.
– In the last week of October, the local people also welcome the traditional “Kate Festival”. It’s one of the largest festival in Bau Truc Village, Ninh Thuan. The visitors should visit during this time, you can enjoy it !
