In Vietnam, every street crossing is an adventure. One of the first instances of culture shock foreigner will get in Vietnam is when you step out of the airport and into Vietnamese street. They will be shocked by the continuos motorbike flow.

It is no accident that foreigners consider crossing the street or driving motobike in Vietnam is a risky adventure. Every time you go to the road, whether walking or cycling, motorcycles are dangerous and whenever accident can happen.

Crossing the street in Vietnam does sound dangerous, but it’s also a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. Crossing the street in Vietnam is nothing like what most people are used to. We offer you a few tips that can be followed to help survive crossing the street in Vietnam:

1.Walk confidently

Don’t be tentative, just walking. This may sound crazy but there’s a saying you hear when travelling in Vietnam that technically you should be able to cross any road blindfolded and still survive. That’s is walk confidently and “DON’T STOP SUDDENLY” in the middle of the street. Remember, don’t be scared.

When you stop, some situation that make you unpredictable and is in fact more dangerous. “Do not stop in the middle of the street if you can”. Sometimes you might have to let a scooter or car go past. However, be predictable. The traffic will flow around you. A scooter or car will avoid from you automatically .

2. Walk slowly

Walking with confidence does not mean walking as fast as you could. Walking slowly allows motorbikes and cars to have time to anticipate your movements and to avoid you. If you try to run or walk too fast to the other side, you will make yourself unpredictable and more dangerous to you as well as other drivers.
The rule is to keep walking slowly, predictably, confidently and in a straight line.

3. Walk in group

If possible, wait for more people to cross the street with you. Walking together in a horizontal line and raising your hands up in the air will make an attention on the street, drivers are willing to make ways for a group of people. It is on of the safest ways to cross the street. You will feel being secured when crossing with a group.

4. Look out around when crossing

Always remember that you “don’t be distracted” when crossing the street. When crossing the street in Vietnam, you not only observe the vehicles ( motobikes, buses and cars), you also pay attention to traffic light to walk faster because when the light turn “green”, all the vehicles instantly move ,even in case that the light is still “red signal”, remains 2,3 second left but they are always in preparation to move.

Motorbikes usually drive slowly and sometimes wait for you to pass when you’re crossing the street but don’t ever expect a Vietnamese bus to slow down for you ! Just remember, be carefully with Vietnamese buses !

5. Following locals and do as they do

if you’ve having trouble crossing the street, wait for a local and walk beside them until you have the hang of crossing on your own. They know more clearly than anybody else what should and shouldn’t do.

Besides, you can ask for locals’ help. Vietnamese people are friendly, sociable and helpful so just try asking anyone to guide you to cross the street. They are willling to help you.

Crossing the street in Vietnam does sound dangerous for foreigners, but it is also a great experience for you. Crossing the street in Vietnam is dangerous but you know, Vietnamese people riding these scooters are quite careful, they move slowly, have unobstructed view, and are cautious not to crash into pedestrians. They are really safe and careful drivers. So, don’t worry. let’s have a positive look at Vietnam traffic to enjoy Vietnam better!!
